A lot of people think mentorship means showing up and expecting the mentor to create the game plan, set the agenda, and handle everything else. But if you really want to get the most out of having a mentor, you’ve got to put in the effort too.
From my experience, here’s how to build a strong mentoring relationship:
1. Show up prepared with questions that help guide your conversations and keep your growth front and center.
2. Stay humble and ready to learn...leave your ego at the door.
3. Respect your mentor without putting them on a pedestal. That way, you can apply their advice in a way that works for you.
4. Don’t wait...start applying what you learn right away.
5. Be fully committed...put in the time, plan out topics, and do the work.
6. Make sure your mentor knows you’re serious about improving, so they see their time isn’t being wasted.
Be a worthy follower.
